Artist Statement
For as long as I can remember I have been cutting and pasting. Through collage, I explore language, place, history, humanity, and humor. Repurposing bits of discarded ephemera prompts memory and reframes the significance of the material’s original intent. Bits of graphic text taken out of context play on the English language and its never-ending pile of homographs, homophones, and homonyms. I also enjoy exploring balance, color, texture, and composition. The medium of collage allows for endless play and 1000’s of stories yet to be told.
I share my home in Albuquerque, with my husband and sweet mutt, Riley and where ephemera gathered over the years lie in waiting to be sorted, snipped, and glued. My works have been featured in a number of publications and exhibited in art spaces in Texas and New Mexico. I also create custom illustrations and commissions upon request.
Bio
For over twenty-five years Houstonian, Christine Jelson West has produced creative cultural programs. Her favorite thing is saying "yes." As an administrator, curator, and community connector with The Orange Show Center for Visionary Art, Galveston Arts Center, Lawndale Art Center, Houston First Corporation, and the City of Albuquerque Public Art and Urban Enhancement Division, she cultivates opportunities for artists, many they may not otherwise be able to consider. A passionate advocate for local creatives, she has curated and juried countless art exhibitions, participated on grant review panels for numerous institutions, volunteered and served on boards for arts organizations, and assisted artists in developing their careers. Her visual arts practice focuses on analog collage, telling human stories through recontextualizing 2-D ephemera. Currently living in Albuquerque, she has shown and sold her artworks in Texas and New Mexico.
